Lost in the Labyrinthine Heart

Lost in the Labyrinthine Heart of Al-Balad, Jeddah

Wandering through the ancient alleys of Al-Balad is like stepping outside of time and immersing oneself in a living history.

Each crooked lane and timeworn stone seemed to hold a story, a whisper from generations past. The air was thick with the scents of cardamom and oud, filled with the murmur of countless conversations and the echoes of footsteps that had traversed these paths for centuries. I recall feeling utterly and wonderfully lost, surrendering to the maze and trusting that each turn would reveal a new, unexpected vista

perhaps a hidden courtyard bathed in sunlight, a tiny workshop where a craftsman diligently carved intricate wood patterns, or a glimpse into lives lived behind heavy wooden doors. In this delightful disorientation, I felt the truth of Italo Calvino’s words:

“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears… and everything conceals something else.”

And Al-Balad concealed a magic that unfolded with every step I took.
